Eric Burdon -Animals immortal songster speaks with Ray Shasho

By Ray Shasho

Eric Burdon is legendary for his explosive soulful vocal deliberations in many shapes and forms. As kids we idolized him as a merciless rock and roll superhero who we all wanted to secretly mirror.

The British Invasion certainly had its share of coolness but The Animals entered the realm of badass. If The Rolling Stones were classified as the bad boys of the British Invasion, then Eric Burdon and The Animals were the original gangsters of Rock and Roll.

Their mega hit messages were significant and way ahead of their time. Songs that made you feel deep within your psyche and then carried through into your soul. Songs like “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place,” “Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “It's My Life,” John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom" and the timeless proverbial favorite “House of the Rising Sun.”

Animals’ bassist Chas Chandler moved on to manage Jimi Hendrix after the group split up in 1966.

Later Burdon reformed the group as Eric Burdon and the Animals. The band’s evolution shifted towards the hippie generation and psychedelic melody while Burdon’s genius for creating Top40 radio hits heightened. Classic radio airplay anthems like “Sky Pilot,” “Monterey,” “San Franciscan Nights,” “When I was Young” and “Don’t Bring Me Down” became mainstay on the U.S. and British charts.

In 1969, Eric Burdon formed the diverse multitalented band War, spawning yet another huge hit with “Spill The Wine.”  Burdon embarked on a successful solo career in 1971.

In 1983 the original Animals reunited for a worldwide tour.

Over the years Burdon has collaborated with the greatest musicians of every genre and toured incessantly around the globe with several variations of The Eric Burdon Band.

In 1994 The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

These days Burdon tours as Eric Burdon & The Animals. He’s written two critically acclaimed memoirs and will release a brand new album soon with a video about Rock and Roll pioneer Bo Diddley. Burdon attended Diddley’s funeral in Gainesville on June 7th 2008.

Marianna Proestou, Eric’s Manager, was graciously accommodating in granting my request for an interview during a hectic tour schedule. Here is my Q&A with Eric Burdon before his show in Cleveland.

How do you explain your longevity in the music business and what artists do you miss the most that are no longer with us?

Longevity is something I never gave a second thought to. I guess it’s the shadow of growing up in post WWII, but I never believed I would live past 20. Here I am though… a senior citizen… my voice and heart are stronger than ever, but boredom is the greatest enemy so I have to be careful not to slip over the edge. I admit that I do dwell on the past a bit, for sure there are people I miss and I wish they were still here.

Do you think Chas Chandler was good for Jimi Hendrix career?

This question touches a very raw nerve for me. For sure Chas’s plans for Jimi initially brought light to one of the world’s most innovative guitarists, but it was inevitable that they would lock horns over creative discussions. I have to admit that Jimi was his own worst enemy, so when things got weird, Chas left. Maybe things would have been different if he'd hung in there with him.

Have you ever considered discovering and managing new bands? Afterall the rock world could definitely use some exciting new talent and who better to launch their careers.

If I could come across someone who oozed talent and could take advise, maybe… but it’s a fact, young people don’t listen. I don’t have the energy to fight that way. The Chandler-Hendrix experience was a great lesson for me. Young talented people usually prove to be a pain in the ass. They should be managed with respect in one hand and a pistol in the other.

I’ve interviewed several prestigious rock stars who don’t have health insurance. Has this been a problem in the industry?

To call it an “industry” is a stretch. The rock biz is the low end of the creative world. Faces come and go so fast. Insurance companies would never touch anyone who boasts about drug use, even though it may be fake bravado. “A dead rock star is worth more than a live one”

I feel that deep down you’d like to play MORE songs with a Latin rhythm. I’ve got Cuban roots and I’d really like to see that happen. I remember when Stephen Stills needed help he called in my good friend Joe Lala. Should I give Joe a call for your next album?

One of my reasons for living in California is it’s close proximity to Mexico. The Latin influence is in every corner of the community. My love of Spanish music hasn't wavered since the 50's. I could hear the blues voicing from the Flamanco families and I always dig for inspiration in Latin music. I just got out of the studio after recording for my new album and a couple of the tracks that we laid down were heavily influenced by Latin music. The album is coming out later this year, so look forward to it.

Will rock and roll ever return to those glory days?

Well, have you seen American Idol lately? I’m sure that some kids somewhere at this moment are thrashing themselves silly over what they call “Rock n’ Roll”

My first book will be out soon, It’s called “Check the Gs.” I love to read and write and I believe you share the same passion. I’ve read both of your books and they were well written. Will you be writing another book soon- and I know you use to collect comic books, who was your favorite character?

“G.I. Joe” and I’ve always looked upon the young pilots of the allies, in World War II's final years, as the original hippies. I suppose I could knuckle down to pen another collection of insanity, but at the moment, I’m too busy reading…

Casinos have become a major venue for classic rock stars, they must pay well, what has been your experience in playing Casinos?

Like it or not, they’re all that’s left of the decent rooms to play in. I’m sure my grandfather, who was addicted to the game, would love to know that his grandson walks out of the best casinos in the world with pockets filled with dough.

How are things going on the road, what are your plans for the future and how's the family?

My family is doing well, thanks for asking. Regarding the future: Is there going to be one? I don't know, but presently I have more shows coming up in the US and Canada and a European tour this summer. As I already mentioned I just finished recording for a new album with a video about Bo Diddley (with the families blessing of course). More recordings and exciting projects are on the way but the fans and the world are just going to have to wait and see.

I know you have asthma, the weather is wonderful here in beautiful Tampa Bay Florida, if you ever consider moving. Brian Johnson (AC DC), Rick Derringer, Graeme Edge (Moody Blues) all live within twenty minutes from me. (Jerry Wexler lived here before his passing in 2008 at 91 years old)

I have friends who live in Florida. I love to visit. I’ve also got close friends in Mississippi, but the most beneficial place for my lungs is in dry weather. If they would stop killing each other, I would love to live in North Africa, but California, as screwed up as it is, is fine for me and has been since the 60’s.

I want to thank Eric Burdon and Marianna Proestou.  I hope to see the both of you in the Tampa Bay area- very soon.

KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley Rocks the Forum in Tampa

By Ray Shasho

The Tampa Bay Lightning couldn’t overcome a 2-1 deficit inside the St Pete Times Forum on Friday evening, but rocker Ace Frehley and his band jammed outside to exhilarate the crowd after the disappointing loss to the Ottawa Senators.

An evening of Hockey plus Rock & Roll equals euphoria.
The St Pete Times Forum’s idea of mixing the both for one gratifying evening was pure genius.
A-Rod and Cameron Diaz even watched from one of the suites.

When the near capacity crowd exited the arena, Ex-Kiss rock and roll hero ‘Space Ace’ Frehley electrified the audience with several big- league guitar solos on his Gibson Les Paul.

Ace wore his favorite number 27 on a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey with his name embedded on the back and wore dark shades throughout the concert. While Ace played and sang he consistently bombarded the crowd with his Guitar Picks.

Frehley astonished the huge Tampa Bay Lightning crowd with his own musical triumphs and songs that he recorded with his old band mates.

It was great to see Ace! Kiss will never be the same band without him. It was always Ace Frehley’s guitar solos and stage presence that made KISS a credible band and not just a visual rock extravaganza.  And I’ve witnessed KISS shows since 1975 when Rush supported them and ticket prices were only $5.50.

Some of the heavy driven rock tunes belted out by Ace and his band Friday evening were “Snowblind” and “New York Groove” from his first solo album in 1978. All the Kiss members released solo efforts that year but Frehley’s album outsold- his three band mates.
Ace played “Sister” from his latest venture- Anomaly and “Rock Soldiers” from his second album -Frehley’s Comet.

Ace Frehley reminded the Tampa crowd that he was almost electrocuted in Lakeland at the Civic Center in 1976, then immediately jumped into his tune “Shock Me” a song both written and sung by Ace on the Kiss- Love Gun album in 1977.

The ‘Spaceman’ launched his old bag of tricks when his electric guitar discharged flames and smoke. The haze encircled the ‘rocketeer rocker’ during one of many impressive guitar solos.

Ace banged out KISS favorites “Love Gun,” along with “Deuce” featuring the choreographed- head bobbing- guitar swaying strut that KISS fans always anticipated during the peak of the song.  The concert concluded with “Cold Gin” from the inaugural- KISS album.

Ace Frehley’s show was action-packed and he left you standing there wanting more
ACE! ACE! ACE!

Frehley turns 60 on April 27th.

Ace Frehley will be featured on VH1’s Classic’s “That Metal Show” on March 26th.

Ace Trivia- When asked who is biggest influence was Frehley remarked that it was his fellow-Bronx neighbor Peppy Castro. Castro was a founding member of the psychedelic rock group the Blues Magoos. (We Ain’t Got Nothin’ Yet) Castro taught Ace how to play the guitar.

I want to personally thank Brian Breseman, Scott Audette and Jessica Eckley for their wonderful hospitality at the St Pete Times Forum.

KISS Army largest social network on the planet

By Ray Shasho

If there were ever a plan devised to take over the world, I believe it could be implemented and achieved through the KISS Army network.

KISS Army is not just a fan club- it’s a way of life.

After publishing an article about EX-KISS guitarist Ace Frehley’s concert following a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game, I decided to create a Facebook site to post my classic rock music articles and share a relentless infatuation for rock & roll with other enthusiasts.

The first person to take notice of the Ace Frehley article on the examiner website was Mali Naoko Frehley. Mali was a girl from Japan adorned in KISS makeup and garb in honor of her idol Ace Frehley. I thought it would be really cool to have a girl who mimicked ‘Space Ace’ on my new site. After all she was a true fan that would surely appreciate the story that I had written about him. Mali became my first Facebook friend. And she joined my site not long after the tsunami hit Japan. But I was glad for her, that she could channel her thoughts in a positive way after such a horrendous disaster.

Soon, there would be many KISS Army friends finding their way into my Facebook site after reading the Ace Frehley article. Almost all of my new Facebook friends had a profile photo embellished in full KISS makeup and they identified themselves with the surname of their favorite KISS band member. Some of the profile pictures looked better than the actual group itself and maybe so because of the hundreds upon hundreds of KISS tribute bands that performs around the world.

When I did a Google search to see if the Ace Frehley Tampa show article was creating any kind of cyberbuzz, I immediately found my story posted on the front page of KISS Army websites around the globe including Japan and Sweden. I was amazed how quickly the news had traveled.
I had never seen such a devotion to one band in my entire life. And I’ve been around the block a few hundred times too.

I was actually the first person at my high school back in 1974 to boast about an innovative new rock band that painted their faces and called themslves simply KISS. I was also one of the first KISS fans in my town to attend one of their first shows. It was only their second appearance in Washington DC- at the 1490 capacity GW Lisner Auditorium with RUSH as their supporting act.

I’ve been a KISS admirer for years but admit I somewhat jumped off the bandwagon when Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss departed. But even with major personnel changes, the KISS Army marches on. And they continue to pay homage to past members as if they never left the band.

The KISS Army began on November 21st 1975. According to KISS-legend, Bill Starkey and his friend Jay Evans founded the KISS Army after local radio station WVTS in Terre Haute Indiana refused to play KISS music.

The 35th Anniversary of the KISS Army was recently celebrated in 2010.

The Global influence of the KISS Army is unparalleled and their networking skills are beyond hypersonic.

I posted a simple question on my Facebook website recently and asked my new KISS Army friends to respond.
“Why do you think KISS fans are the greatest fans on the planet?” Here were a few responses.
“Wow. I could go on and on…KISS fans are so awesome, they all band together, it’s like a family,we all have opinions, likes and dislikes but WE all LOVE the music!!! And we are always growing…little ones to older ones. KISS music has a lot of meaning to each and all!”…Caleigha Starchild Stanley- Passaic, New Jersey.
“We are the greatest fans because they are the greatest leaders…” Lynn Horton- KISS Army Nebraska Division.
“We Love the Music. We Love the Show. We Love the Members. But I think the most important thing is KISS created Super Hero Characters that Fans Identify With.”…David Robinson- KISS Army Australia.
“The fans love the band not only for the music but what the band does for children and people in need- or even people that have been there supporting them ever since they started. I am a member of the KISS Army and I am also one of their numerous biggest fans.”…Chris Mangum- Farmington, New Mexico.
“I love KISS not just because of their music, I love KISS because it’s a way of life” …Danny Black- Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I truly believe that the KISS Army could do a better job sustaining peace around the world than the United Nations. As a matter of fact former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice became a KISS Army member in 2008.

And when the day finally transpires when KISS is no longer able to Rock and Roll All Night, I’m almost certain that the KISS Army will continue to Party Every Day.

“Giving Hunger The Blues” Block Party Rocks Sarasota

By Ray Shasho

Thousands of people flocked onto Hillview Street in Sarasota on Sunday afternoon for the 16th Annual “Giving Hunger the Blues” Block Party. The focus of the event was to raise money to feed, nurture and protect the children of the community. In Sarasota County alone, one out of ten neighbors combat hunger every day and of those… 33% are children.

“Giving Hunger The Blues” began in 1996 and has grown to become the All Faiths Food Bank’s biggest one day fundraiser, having contributed, to date, over eight hundred thousand dollars.

It was a magnificent all day event that included mostly fun under a beautiful Florida sunshine. The climax was a phenomenal stage performance by two of rock and roll’s finest musicians.

First, Floridian Larry Hoppen graced the stage. Hoppen is the co-founder and voice of the Classic Pop band Orleans. His brother Lane Hoppen was also on stage to play keyboards. Hoppen and his band immediately allured the Sarasota crowd into a festive frenzy by playing the 1975- Top40 hit “Dance with me.”
Later Hoppen enticed the crowd with several hits including the 1979- “Love takes time” and “Dancing in the Moonlight” a song written by Sherman Kelly (brother of Orleans late original drummer Wells Kelly) in 1969 and then turned into a huge hit by the group King Harvest in 1973. Larry Hoppen was in the band Boffalongo with Sherman Kelly before forming Orleans. But when Larry Hoppen brought out the headliner for the evening (who played his entire performance on stage with Hoppen and his band) the crowd went absolutely wild!

John Cafferty (Beaver Brown Band) darted out from behind the stage with one simple goal in mind- TO ROCK THE HOUSE DOWN! Cafferty shot out like a missile and initiated a dynamic performance of “On the Dark Side” from the soundtrack of the 1983 movie “Eddie and the Cruisers.”

Cafferty looked and sounded remarkable, and he was somewhat reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen. His hard driven- upbeat rock & roll anthems from the soundtrack had the Sarasota crowd dancing as if they were being televised on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. Everyone celebrated the return of Eddie Wilson.

Cafferty joked about being asked by Sylvester Stallone to write the soundtrack for his movie Cobra, recalling that it was one of Stallones least popular films. Then Cafferty asked the Sarasota crowd to remember our troops and began to sing “Voice of America's Sons” from Cobra. John Cafferty also performed “Hearts on Fire” from the Rocky IV soundtrack.

The evening ended with Larry Hoppen and his band performing the Orleans 1976 mega-hit “Still the One.”

It was a wonderful day with a tremendous outpouring of enthusiastic music lovers supporting an urgent cause.

Dave Mason+Mark Farner+Rick Derringer+ Felix Cavaliere+Gary Wright =Hippiefest

 By Ray Shasho

It certainly feels like classic rock tours go out of their way these days to evade the state of Florida. So when a good tour finally trickles its way towards the Tampa Bay area, its cause for celebration, especially when five Rock & Roll legends band together under one roof.

On August 27th at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater- probably the best Hippiefest event ever rolls into town.

This year’s Hippiefest headlines Ex Traffic guitarist Dave Mason.
Mason cofounded the band Traffic after Steve Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group. In 1967 Mason left the band after the release of the Mr. Fantasy album. Mason rejoined the band for awhile in 1968 and recorded “Feelin’ Alright,” a song that became Mason’s trademark. “Feelin’ Alright” was covered by Joe Cocker in 1969. Mason went on to join Delaney & Bonnie & Friends in 1969 and released his debut solo album Alone Together  producing the hit single-  “Only you know and I know” The album reached gold in the U.S. hitting # 22 on the record charts.

Mason has shared his extraordinary musical talents with a list of legends- including George Harrison, (Mason appeared on Harrison’s critically- acclaimed album All Things Must Pass) Eric Clapton’s Derek & the Dominos, the Rolling Stones, Leon Russell, Cass Elliot and his good friend Jimi Hendrix(Mason played his 12 string acoustic guitar on All Along the Watchtower).

Dave Mason hit superstardom throughout the 70’s with a handful of highly successful albums reaching platinum and gold status- It’s Like You Never Left, Split Coconut, Certified Live, Let it Flow and Mariposo de Oro. Top 40 hits “We Just Disagree” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” were spawned from that triumphant period.

Mason and Traffic bandmate Jim Capaldi reunited for a tour that produced the 1999 album Live: The 40,000 Headmen Tour.

Traffic was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004.

Twenty Six Letters, 12 Notes is Dave Mason’s most current album- released in 2008.

Grand Funk guitarist and singer Mark Farner is also on the bill of Rock & Roll heavyweights to appear at Hippiefest. Grand Funk Railroad broke the Beatles attendance record for Shea Stadium by selling out in only- 72 hours. Mark’s inspirational- classic “I’m Your Captain” was the highlight of the Shea concert.

Mark Farner accepted an invitation to play with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band in 1995.

Mark’s voice is as strong as ever on his most recent release “For the People.”

Bradenton resident and guitar virtuoso Rick Derringer was just 17 years old when he had his first hit with the McCoy’s called, “Hang on Sloopy.”That song actually knocked The Beatles “Yesterday”out of the top spot. Derringer’s 1974 top 40 hit, “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” and his amazing guitar solo on the single version of Edgar Winter’s, “Free Ride” continue to  rock the radio airwaves.

Derringer will be finishing up a tour with Ringo Starr’s  All-Starr band  in Europe  over the summer.

You can also catch Rick Derringer on April 29th at Blast Friday on Cleveland Street in Downtown Clearwater.

Rick’s most recent album is called Knighted by the Blues.

Felix Cavaliere was originally a member of Joey Dee and the Starliters (Peppermint Twist) but enjoyed rock and roll eminence with The Young Rascals. From 1965 through 1969, the Rascals were one of the most popular groups in America.
The Rascals delivered classic mainstay radio hits like “Good Lovin,” “Groovin,” “A girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free.”

Cavaliere has released five solo albums since his days with the Rascals.

In 1997, Felix Cavaliere along with his former Rascals band members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Gary Wright formed the group Spooky Tooth in 1967. After releasing their critically acclaimed first album It’s All About, the band embarked on worldwide tours supporting Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.
Wright became an important player in the rock music circle collaborating with close friend George Harrison on the All Things Must Pass album. Gary Wright has worked with Harrison playing keyboards and co-writing material on many of Harrison’s songs.

Wright celebrated two solo efforts with A&M Records, Extraction and Footprint. He also released three other albums with a reunited Spooky Tooth that included Foreigner’s future guitar hero Mick Jones.
But Gary Wright’s career skyrocketed after the 1975 release of The Dream Weaver. The album featured the first- ever all keyboard synthesizer band.  In 1976 Dream Weaver hit #1 on the U.S. charts followed by the #2 favorite “Love Is Alive.”

In 1981 Wright reached the Billboard charts once again with “Really Wanna Know You.”
Wright has also concentrated his efforts on delivering musical film scores and soundtracks.

In 2008 Gary Wright was asked to be part of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band.

Gary Wright’s most recent release is called Connected. The album features guest performances by Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter.

You can preorder tickets for Hippiefest here.

U2 continues to sellout stadiums despite music industry failures

By Ray Shasho

In this shameful musical era filled of American Idol absurdity, it’s refreshing to witness true heroes of the music world entertaining the intelligent enthusiast.

The internationally renowned Irish rock band U2 has perpetually been a top draw amongst music enthusiasts since the early 80’s. After their first album Boy (produced the hits “A Day Without Me, “I Will Follow”) was released in 1980, U2 frontman Bono revealed to Rolling Stone Magazine...
“Even at this stage, I do feel we are meant to be one of the great bands, there’s a certain spark, a certain chemistry, that was special about the Stones, the Who and the Beatles, and I think it’s also special about U2.”
U2’s collaborations and humanitarian efforts in addressing poverty and social issues around the globe have surely earned them the title of rock’s Ambassadors. Bono referred to the bands symbolic “Sunday Bloody Sunday” the opening track from their 1983 album, War as...
“A song of hope and a song of disgust.”
Drummer Larry Mullen mentioned that it was...
“The first time we ever really made a statement.”
Bono was awarded knighthood in 2007 for his humanitarian efforts around the world.

U2’s album War reached  #12 in the U.S. and was their first album to go platinum.
The band transformed into their current majestic stage presence with the release of Under a Blood Red Sky, a live album recorded in Colorado, Boston and Germany.

By 1985 the band was touring intensely to sold-out arenas and stadiums- including an unforgettable performance at Live Aid.

In 1987, U2 released their masterpiece The Joshua Tree- spawning the #1 hit singles- “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” The album sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and escalated the band into superstardom.

In 1991, U2 changed gears musically with the release of Achtung Baby produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and produced five hit songs including “One”, “Mysterious Ways”  and “The Fly.”

Throughout the 90’s, U2’s Zoo TV and PopMart tours lured millions of fans to monster concert venues as they watched performances on extravagant stage sets.

By 2001, U2 returned to the basics with their album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” topping the charts in 32 countries. U2 also won song of the year at the Grammy’s for “Beautiful Day.

U2 released How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb in 2004. The album produced the hit “Vertigo”

Their most current album,No Line on the Horizon was the bands 12th  studio album. U2 once again collaborated with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The band supported the album with their worldwide 360- degree tour. The tour officially launched June 30th 2009 and ends July 30th 2011- covering 110 shows.
U2’s only Florida appearance for 2011 will be on June 29th at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Tickets are available here.

The tour will set industry records of epic proportions. Including- largest concert stage ever toured,highest-grossing tour of all time (more than the previous record held by The Rolling Stones of $558 million) and it will also hold the record for highest-attended tour of all time with over 7 million tickets sold (again beating The Rolling Stones previous record of 6.3 million tickets sold.)

U2 was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2005.

The band conquered 22- Grammy Awards and countless supplementary awards globally. U2 have sold more than 150 million records, placing them amongst the best selling music artists of all time.
And the band has accomplished all of this with its four original members...
Paul David Hewson(Bono)- Vocals, David Howell Evans(The Edge)- Guitar, Adam Charles Clayton- Bass and Lawrence Joseph “Larry” Mullen Jr.-Drums.
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked U2 at # 22 in its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time"

A FINAL NOTE
Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl recently blasted Glee creator Ryan Murphy. These are some of Grohl’s comments to The Hollywood Reporter...
"It’s every band’s right, you shouldn’t have to do bleepingGlee. And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his bleeping’ show … bleep that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee. No, we don’t want to be on your show.”

David Grohl on Glee…yea right! The Foo Fighters are going to tour with Lemmy and Motorhead this spring. Get real!
