Butterflies symbolize change, hope and transformation. They also represent pure joy. Through all his musical journeys, Felix Cavaliere has never lost that same delight. It wasn’t the structured, precise sounds his piano teacher taught him so long ago – for Cavaliere, one of the founders of GRAMMY winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees The Rascals, he can still recall the moment he heard rock and roll for the first time.

Ensconced by its loose, soulful sound, Cavaliere still infuses that same enthusiasm when he’s talking about a language beyond words: music. His work has never been bolder as it is in his new album “Then And Now.”

“Then And Now” (Atisha Records/Ingram Music Distribution) lands Friday, September 15. The 10-track album comes just over a year after Cavaliere penned “Memoir Of A Rascal” (Ingram Spark).

“This album came about during the pandemic, whereas I needed to really find a way to lift my spirits from not being on stage and touring,” Cavaliere said.

“The ‘then’ songs are the songs that made me want to sing and play. The ‘now’ songs reflect those past influences.” With No. 1 songs like “Good Lovin’”, “Groovin’”, “A Beautiful Morning”, “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long”, “People Got To Be Free” and “How Can I Be Sure”, The Rascals are considered the best ‘blue-eyed soul’ group to come out of the 1960s.

For Cavaliere, The King of Blue-Eyed Soul©, making people feel good is fundamental to his illustrious career that includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame and Musicians Hall of Fame. As a solo artist, Cavaliere connected with a new generation of fans with his hit “Only A Heart Sees” in 1979, and in 2008 Cavaliere worked with Steve Cropper on the Grammy-nominated “Nudge It Up A Notch.” In 2019, Cavaliere was inducted into the Musicians Hall Of Fame. Cavaliere is a 2022 recipient of the Free Speech in Music Award presented by Middle Tennessee University. Cavaliere’s message of peace, love and happiness endures in his music and is likewise threaded through his autobiography, a reminder to never stop listening for the world’s beauty.

“Then And Now” is Cavaliere’s first solo album since 1993’s “Dreams In Motion” (MCA).

As founding member of ‘The Rascals’ Felix Cavaliere’s message has always been to stand for peace, love, and happiness. In addition to being regarded as the King of Blue-Eyed Soul, Felix is unquestionably a prince when it comes to being socially involved. From refusing to play shows that weren’t of mixed race, to spending a lifetime fighting on behalf of those in need, Felix has always put his actions where his passions lay. “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “It’s a Beautiful Morning”, “You Better Run”, “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart No More”, “People Got to Be Free” are just a small, yet illustrious example of the music Felix has created. Making people feel good has always been primary to his illustrious 50-year career that includes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Musician’s Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. Few artists can claim they defined a generation; and here within these pages Felix Cavaliere goes deep, all the while reminding us to keep listening for the world’s beauty.

BOOK REVIEW

-By Literary Titan (5) STARS

The Rock Star Chronicles by Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.

The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.

Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.

The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music.  The second noteworthy thing is the use of high-definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.

Dave Mason+Mark Farner+Rick Derringer+ Felix Cavaliere+Gary Wright =Hippiefest

 By Ray Shasho

It certainly feels like classic rock tours go out of their way these days to evade the state of Florida. So when a good tour finally trickles its way towards the Tampa Bay area, its cause for celebration, especially when five Rock & Roll legends band together under one roof.

On August 27th at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater- probably the best Hippiefest event ever rolls into town.

This year’s Hippiefest headlines Ex Traffic guitarist Dave Mason.
Mason cofounded the band Traffic after Steve Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group. In 1967 Mason left the band after the release of the Mr. Fantasy album. Mason rejoined the band for awhile in 1968 and recorded “Feelin’ Alright,” a song that became Mason’s trademark. “Feelin’ Alright” was covered by Joe Cocker in 1969. Mason went on to join Delaney & Bonnie & Friends in 1969 and released his debut solo album Alone Together  producing the hit single-  “Only you know and I know” The album reached gold in the U.S. hitting # 22 on the record charts.

Mason has shared his extraordinary musical talents with a list of legends- including George Harrison, (Mason appeared on Harrison’s critically- acclaimed album All Things Must Pass) Eric Clapton’s Derek & the Dominos, the Rolling Stones, Leon Russell, Cass Elliot and his good friend Jimi Hendrix(Mason played his 12 string acoustic guitar on All Along the Watchtower).

Dave Mason hit superstardom throughout the 70’s with a handful of highly successful albums reaching platinum and gold status- It’s Like You Never Left, Split Coconut, Certified Live, Let it Flow and Mariposo de Oro. Top 40 hits “We Just Disagree” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” were spawned from that triumphant period.

Mason and Traffic bandmate Jim Capaldi reunited for a tour that produced the 1999 album Live: The 40,000 Headmen Tour.

Traffic was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004.

Twenty Six Letters, 12 Notes is Dave Mason’s most current album- released in 2008.

Grand Funk guitarist and singer Mark Farner is also on the bill of Rock & Roll heavyweights to appear at Hippiefest. Grand Funk Railroad broke the Beatles attendance record for Shea Stadium by selling out in only- 72 hours. Mark’s inspirational- classic “I’m Your Captain” was the highlight of the Shea concert.

Mark Farner accepted an invitation to play with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band in 1995.

Mark’s voice is as strong as ever on his most recent release “For the People.”

Bradenton resident and guitar virtuoso Rick Derringer was just 17 years old when he had his first hit with the McCoy’s called, “Hang on Sloopy.”That song actually knocked The Beatles “Yesterday”out of the top spot. Derringer’s 1974 top 40 hit, “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” and his amazing guitar solo on the single version of Edgar Winter’s, “Free Ride” continue to  rock the radio airwaves.

Derringer will be finishing up a tour with Ringo Starr’s  All-Starr band  in Europe  over the summer.

You can also catch Rick Derringer on April 29th at Blast Friday on Cleveland Street in Downtown Clearwater.

Rick’s most recent album is called Knighted by the Blues.

Felix Cavaliere was originally a member of Joey Dee and the Starliters (Peppermint Twist) but enjoyed rock and roll eminence with The Young Rascals. From 1965 through 1969, the Rascals were one of the most popular groups in America.
The Rascals delivered classic mainstay radio hits like “Good Lovin,” “Groovin,” “A girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free.”

Cavaliere has released five solo albums since his days with the Rascals.

In 1997, Felix Cavaliere along with his former Rascals band members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Gary Wright formed the group Spooky Tooth in 1967. After releasing their critically acclaimed first album It’s All About, the band embarked on worldwide tours supporting Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.
Wright became an important player in the rock music circle collaborating with close friend George Harrison on the All Things Must Pass album. Gary Wright has worked with Harrison playing keyboards and co-writing material on many of Harrison’s songs.

Wright celebrated two solo efforts with A&M Records, Extraction and Footprint. He also released three other albums with a reunited Spooky Tooth that included Foreigner’s future guitar hero Mick Jones.
But Gary Wright’s career skyrocketed after the 1975 release of The Dream Weaver. The album featured the first- ever all keyboard synthesizer band.  In 1976 Dream Weaver hit #1 on the U.S. charts followed by the #2 favorite “Love Is Alive.”

In 1981 Wright reached the Billboard charts once again with “Really Wanna Know You.”
Wright has also concentrated his efforts on delivering musical film scores and soundtracks.

In 2008 Gary Wright was asked to be part of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band.

Gary Wright’s most recent release is called Connected. The album features guest performances by Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter.
