Paul Reed Smith is an internationally known guitar maker, musician and guitar player. Those facts are brilliantly evidenced on the debut album from his Eightlock band, Lions Roaring in Quicksand, which releases December 1st on Steele Records, distributed by Amplified Distribution The first single, "Breathe," will be released digitally on Friday, November 10th.

Paul Reed Smith - Eightlock is a band of high-level musicians who are friends and have “locked” together recording and performing a new kind of groove with its roots in Baltimore funk, DC go-go and New Orleans swing. The band’s sound is a heady brew of blues, soul, rock, funk and other roots sounds, all stirred-up into a groove-alicious gumbo.  The line-up is three drummers, a bass player, a female singer and three guitar players, and the excitement around their three-drummer groove is infectious.

The band’s three drummers are: Dennis Chambers (John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin) who was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2001; Gregory Grainger (Whitney Houston, Acoustic Alchemy); and Ju Ju House the legendary DC Go-Go drummer (Roberta Flack, Trevor Horn and The Chuck Brown Band). Bassist Gary Grainger has performed with John Scofield, Nancy Wilson, George Duke and Bill Evans. Vocalist Mia Samone Davis has a beautiful multifaceted voice that got its start in gospel music at a very young age. Guitarist Mike Ault regularly performs with high caliber artists including Rachelle Ferrell, David Grissom, and Davy Knowles. Guitarist Bill Nelson is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center where he was introduced and invited to join the band in their efforts to raise money for cancer patients and families.

“This group of highly respected and world-renowned musicians have a lot to say musically and spiritually,” Paul Reed Smith says. “It’s been an absolute joy to be the catalyst for their gifts resulting in the music found in Lions Roaring in Quicksand.”  Added guitarist/vocalist Bill Nelson: “The musicianship in Eightlock is extraordinary, but what amazes me most is that the music - both the recordings and live performances - just keep getting better and better. Locking into an Eightlock groove is a dream." And dynamic lead singer Mia Samone Davis summed it up by saying, "Creating this CD reminded me that, ‘Peace is the price when the mind is at war’......inner peace is priceless."

In addition to performing and recording with his own band, Paul Reed Smith has played with artists such as Santana, Alter Bridge and the Doobie Brothers. He was honored by Vintage Guitar Magazine as a Hall of Fame inductee in 2011. Paul has countless industry connections through all of the artists that endorse his guitars, plus invaluable marketing opportunities through his guitar company and all of the music stores around the world that sell his guitars. Grammy-award winning Mexican rock band ManaƬ had him open a show at the LA Forum this year.  In addition to 10 powerful original songs on Lions Roaring in Quicksand, the new album features a cover of a ManaƬ song in English, “Ay, Doctor,” as well as scintillating versions of the Al Green soul classic, “Love and Happiness,” the legendary Edwin Starr song, “War,” and “99,” a European hit for Elliot Moss’ original version released in France.

BOOK REVIEW

-By Literary Titan (5) STARS

The Rock Star Chronicles by Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.

The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.

Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.

The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music.  The second noteworthy thing is the use of high-definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.

In 1957 Javier BƔtiz founded a group called Los TJ's with which he picked up musical influences that were received in the Mexican border cities of black music, blues and R & B from people like T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, James Brown, among others.

By 1968 Javier BƔtiz became a famous figure in the world of blues in Mexico and was hired to play at the Terraza Casino bar, which was a successful season. Personalities from all walks of life gathered every night to accuse impressive crowds in that place, including politicians, artists and intellectuals. That popularity led him to perform in 1969 the first massive outdoor concert in Mexico held by authorities of the then Department of the Federal District in the Alameda Central and where, according to eyewitness calculations, Javier played before an audience of at least 18 thousand people.

Javier is known as a teacher of people like: Carlos Santana, Alex Lora, Abraham Laboriel, Fito de la Parra (Canned Heat), and Guillermo BriseƱo. Carlos Santana has always been recognized as the creator of the sound of Javier BĆ”tiz. In the year 2000 he participated in Canned Heat's Disco Boogie 2000, with the theme ̈The world of make believe ̈ song that took the first places in Europe, which earned him to travel with Canned Heat on tour in Milan, CeseƱa, Terramo and Naples, in Italy.

In 2008 he released the album El Brujo USA as well as the presentation of the documentary Made in Mexico by Fito de la Parra, in the United States and presentations in Santa Ana, CA, at El Whiskey a Go Go, as well as at the Blues Fest Festival, also in his book The Flight of the Angel.

In 2016 he traveled to the city of Chicago to play with Buddy Guy in his place "The Legends."

In 2017 he was invited by MacGillivray Freeman Film to begin a new facet of narration, for large format 3D films for the Imax In this musical journey, BƔtiz recounts the journeys of the singer and composer Aloe Blacc who traces the roots of music of the United States and follow in the footsteps of Louis Armstrong, through the stages and cultures where the music of the United States was born, visiting iconic cities of music such as New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Nashville.
