Guy Pratt rose to prominence when he was chosen as the bass player for Pink Floyd’s post-Roger Waters Delicate Sound of Thunder and P*U*L*S*E world tours in 1987 and 1994. He co-performed the vocals in “Run Like Hell”, “Another Brick in The Wall (Part 2)”, “Us and Them” and “Comfortably Numb” with David Gilmour during the live shows. He also performed on several tracks on The Division Bell album, though most of the bass parts were performed by Gilmour. Tony Levin performed most of the bass parts on Momentary Lapse of Reason, with Pratt replacing him on the accompanying tour due to Levin ‘s unavailability.

He also toured as part of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour’s On an Island band, alongside another Pink Floyd member (and his father-in-law), Richard Wright. Guy has played on countless hit records for the likes of Tom Jones, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, Ronan Keating, Electronic, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Orb, Natalie Imbruglia, All Saints, Bond, and Elton John.

As well as touring with Coverdale Page, The Power Station and Gary Moore. He has also tried his hand at writing and producing, notching up hits with artists including RobertPalmer, The Orb, Fat Les, Jimmy Nail, Marianne Faithful and Debbie Harry. He has won a Grammy and been nominated for 2 Ivor Novello Awards. Aside from his bass playing, Guy has spent time in the comparatively quiet world of Film & TV music composing. He has contributed score and songs for ‘Hackers’ and ‘Still Crazy’ as well as writing and producing the scores for Channel 4′s ‘Spaced’ (Series 1&2), ‘Now You See Her’ (film for Sky TV), ‘The Young Person’s Guide to becoming a Rock Star’, ‘Randall & Hopkirk (deceased)’, and the BBC series ‘Linda Green’. Also contributing to Dawn French’s ‘Wild West’ and ‘Jimmy Nail’s Crocodile Shoes 2′. Not to mention the theme music for ‘the Pepsi Chart show ‘and various commercials. Documentaries include ‘Riddle of the skies’, ‘The Roswell Incident’, ‘Terror in Texas’, ‘Gloria’s Toxic Death’, ‘The Underboss’, ‘Tracing Che’, ‘Greatest Heroes’ and ‘The Oldest Mummies on earth’. For theatre he co-wrote the score for ‘The Bedbug’ by Mayakovsky with Gary Kemp, ‘The Remarkable Piety of the Infamous’ which was performed at The Baron’s Court Theatre and ‘Lena’ by Carla Lane performed at the Valley Theatre, Liverpool and The Pleasance, Edinburgh.

He was also Musical Director of ‘I just called by to see the man’ directed by Richard Wilson at the Royal Court. In 2005 he took his one-man comedy show, ‘My Bass and other Animals’ to Edinburgh, where it was a sellout hit. He then toured it successfully over the next few years, whilst finding time to squeeze in tours and recording with David Gilmour, Roxy Music (with whom he appeared at Live 8) and Bryan Ferry. He also played on the Jimmy Page/ Leona Lewis version of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ for the Beijing Olympics. His book ‘My Bass and other Animals’ was published in 2007, garnering both critical and commercial success, and currently on its fifth reprint. In July 2008 he undertook a twenty-one-date tour of Australia with his updated show ‘Breakfast of Idiots’.

He had previously taken his show down under twice before, including 2 appearances on the smash hit TV show ‘Spicks & Specks’.

Guy returned to the Edinburgh festival in 2010 with his new show ‘Guy Pratt’s Wake Up Call!’ which he also performed at the Manchester Comedy Festival and Notting Hill’s 20th Century Theatre in October 2010.

He embarked on a tour of Australia and New Zealand with the show in the Spring of 2011. Guy was also the musical director of the last two series of The Rob Brydon Show. He was also host of 2 major events and international consultant on the Word Adelaide Festival in August 2013.

Guy Pratt came of age just as playing bass became sexy. In spurning the guitar solo, punk put the low-end on more of an equal footing—or maybe it was just that Paul Simonon and Bruce Foxton were pretty cool. Either way, people were trying out the basslines of "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" or "Peaches." Having dallied with Funkapolitan, Pratt suddenly found himself on Top of the Pops and supporting David Bowie with the smooth Australian outfit Icehouse. At a ludicrously young age he became a sought-after bass player to the stars, finding himself crawling from studios to bars and from hotels to stadiums with the likes of Robert Palmer, Womack & Womack, Bernard Edwards, Bryan Ferry, and David Crosby. The 1980s were in their prime, and with a number of Crolla-suited appearances in windswept videos behind him, he was invited to join Pink Floyd for a series of stadium extravaganzas to make Bono & Co. look fairly modest.

He was in The Smiths for a week, has traveled through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page, spent time in the studio with Michael Jackson, and has lived to tell all. This autobiographical account emerges from the successful stand-up tour of the same name, charting his journey from a Mod band to playing with Roxy Music at Live 8.

THE ROCK STAR CHRONICLES

BOOK TRAILER

BOOK REVIEW

-By Literary Titan (5) STARS

The Rock Star Chronicles, by Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.

The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.

Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.

The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music.  The second noteworthy thing is the use of high-definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.
