CLOSE ENEMIES IGNITE SARASOTA: A ROCK SUPERGROUP PROVES ITS POWER AT ENCORE LIVE! CONCERT REVIEW BY MUSIC JOURNALIST RAY SHASHO

Close Enemies

Ignite Sarasota:

A Rock Supergroup Proves

Its Power at Encore Live

concert review by Ray Shasho

'Interviewing the Legends'

Sarasota’s brandnew Encore Live nightclub didnt just host a concert on Sunday night  it hosted a seismic event. Close Enemies, the newly formed allstar rock collective, delivered a blistering, highoctane performance that left the packed house buzzing long after the final notes faded. For a venue still finding its identity, this show felt like a christening by fire.

“Close Enemies proved they’re not a side project — they’re a force.”

The band’s lineup reads like a rock historian’s fever dream: Aerosmith bassist and songwriter Tom Hamilton, The Babys’ powerhouse drummer Tony Brock, Sheryl Crow’s longtime guitarist Peter Stroud, AC/DC and Aerosmith guitar techturnedaxeslinger Trace Foster, and frontman Chasen Hampton, whose voice proved every bit as commanding and versatile as his Disneyera résumé suggests. Together, they formed a unit that felt both impossibly seasoned and startlingly fresh.

“Close Enemies didn’t just play Sarasota — they detonated it.”

The show kicked off promptly at 9 p.m. with “Rain,” a moody, atmospheric opener that set the tone for a night built on dynamics — thunderous peaks, soulful valleys, and everything in between. From there, Close Enemies wasted no time showcasing their original material. “Sound of a Train,” “Inside Out,” and “Sweet Baby Jesus” revealed a band with a clear identity: muscular rock grooves anchored by Hamilton’s melodic bass lines, Brock’s thunderous precision, and Stroud and Foster’s interlocking guitars that alternated between grit and grace.

“When Tom Hamilton locks in with Tony Brock, you’re hearing rock history

 breathing in real time.”

Hampton, meanwhile, proved to be the band’s secret weapon. His voice soared, cracked, whispered, and roared — whatever the moment demanded, he delivered. On “Take a Pill” and “More Than I Could Ever Need,” he commanded the stage with the confidence of a frontman who knows he belongs in the same room as legends.

Chasen Hampton didn’t just front the band — he owned the room.”

The night’s first major eruption came with “Midnight Rendezvous,” a nod to Brock’s tenure with The Babys. The crowd recognized the opening riff instantly, and Brock — smiling like a man revisiting an old friend — drove the song with the swagger only he can summon.

Close Enemies also proved fearless in their future classic  “Battlefield” a surprise highlight.  Later, Seasons of Wither showcased Hamiltons deep connection to the Aerosmith catalog, with the band delivering a haunting, faithful rendition that drew one of the nights loudest ovations.

Originals like “Wink & a Feather” kept the momentum high, each one revealing a different facet of the band’s chemistry — from bluestinged grit to soaring melodic rock.

But the closing stretch is where Close Enemies truly detonated. “Sick as a Dog” and “Sweet Emotion” turned the room into a fullthrottle celebration of Hamilton’s legacy, with the audience singing every word. The encorestyle finale — a drum solo leading into “Head First” — was a masterclass in showmanship. Brock’s solo was explosive without ever becoming indulgent, and when the band crashed into the final song, the room felt like it might lift off its foundation.

Peter Stroud delivered a spellbinding performance, his lead guitar work holding the Encore Live audience in absolute silence. Long admired by fellow musicians, Stroud deserves far wider recognition as one of the most expressive and technically gifted guitarists of his generation. It’s time for music journalists to elevate his standing among the all‑time greats.

Trace Foster, the band’s second guitarist, is the definition of a pure, instinctive musician. His years onstage with Angus Young (AC/DC), Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones), and Joe Perry (Aerosmith) have shaped a player whose tone, timing, and touch place him firmly among the industry’s elite.

By the end of the night, one thing was unmistakably clear: Close Enemies aren’t a novelty supergroup or a nostalgic side project. They’re a real band — tight, inspired, and hungry. Sarasota witnessed something special: the birth of a powerhouse.

If this show is any indication, Close Enemies won’t be playing intimate clubs for long. They’re built for bigger rooms, bigger crowds, and bigger moments. And after Sunday night, Sarasota will be able to say it saw the spark before the wildfire.

The evening was also visited by rock icons Joe Perry, the lead guitarist for Aerosmith, Duane Betts of The Allman Betts Band, Dan Donegan of Disturbed, Jimmy Fadden of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Ed Roland lead singer of Collective Soul.

“For one night, Encore Live felt less like a venue and more like the center

 of the rock‑and‑roll universe.”

Close Enemies debut album will be released on March 13th.

MARC STORACE was already internationally successful with the Swiss cult band "TEA" in the 1970s. TEA released 5 albums and 3 singles. In 1979 Marc became the voice of KROKUS. After their first album with Marc, "Metal Rendez-Vous" (with the hit "Bedside Radio"), the rise to a successful international career was unstoppable. KROKUS played several world tours and sold over 15 million records and won many gold and platinum awards. After internal quarrels, KROKUS broke up and Marc released the album “Blue” in 1991 with the band “Blue”. The hit "You Can't Stop The Rainfall" is still played on the radio today.

In the 90s and 2000s Marc starred in 2 feature films (“ANUK” and “HANDYMAN”), and again achieved gold status with various KROKUS formations and 3 albums. Marc stayed present with his fans with many guest appearances such as “Rock Meets Classic”, “Sweet 50th Anniversary”, “Ken Hensley live in Switzerland”, “Schubert In Rock”, or on the albums of Manfred Ehlert's “Amen” and the rock opera “Test”.

In 2008 the music scene was surprised with the news that the original formation of KROKUS would go on tour again. The success was indescribable. Tours in the USA, Japan, Europe and South America as well as 3 new studio albums, which in turn achieved platinum status, proved that KROKUS was still flourishing after more than 2000 shows in the last 30 years. In December 2019, KROKUS played their farewell concert in the sold out Hallenstadion in Zurich.

Marc started working on his solo career at the beginning of 2021. His first solo CD is released in the USA & Canada February 5th, 2022 and going on tour with his own band “STORACE” in autumn is in the works. The fans will be amazed at the enthusiasm and freshness with which “STORACE” rocks the stage. He will showcase songs from his new CD and from his long career since the 1970s.

BOOK REVIEW

-By Literary Titan (5) STARS

The Rock Star Chroniclesby Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.

The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.

Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.

The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music.  The second noteworthy thing is the use of high-definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.
