Our Very Special Guest Today is Marky Ramone the drummer for the legendary punk rock band the Ramones.

Marky Ramone is best known for the 15 years he spent drumming for the Ramones. Prior to joining the Ramones, Marky played with an array of influential musicians dating back to his high school years when he was a member of the Brooklyn based hard rock band, Dust. Recording two albums with his friends, Richie Wise (guitar and vocals) and Kenny Aaronson (bass) for Neil Bogart’s Karma Sutra/Buddha label.

In 1976, Marky was introduced to Richard Hell. Along with Bob Quine and Ivan Julian, they formed Richard Hell & the Voidoids. The Voidoids released their groundbreaking debut album in 1977 on Sire Records, entitled “Blank Generation”. Shortly after the Voidoids historic U.K. tour with The Clash, Marky found himself at the bar at CBGB with Dee Dee Ramone. Dee Dee asked him if he would be interested in joining The Ramones. The spring of 1978, Marky joined the Ramones. In a matter of weeks he was in the studio recording his first album with The Ramones entitled, “Road to Ruin”, which features one of the biggest Ramones songs “I Wanna Be Sedated”. The following year the Ramones filmed the cult classic “Rock 'n' Roll High School”. Later that year, they joined forces with producer legend, Phil Spector to record “End Of The Century”.

After several tours and two more studio albums, Marky was asked to leave the band in 1983, only to rejoin his band mates in 1987 until they decided to call it quits in 1996. His tenure with the Ramones spanned a total of 15 years. Performing over 1700 shows and more than 15 releases, including songwriting credits on both Mondo Bizarro and Adios Amigos, the bands farewell release.

 In 2000, Marky reunited with long time friend Joey Ramone for Joey’s solo effort “Don't Worry About Me”. In 2001, Marky along with his former band mates (Johnny, Dee Dee and Tommy), were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. That same year, U2’s Bono presented the Ramones with the MTV’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The DVD release, “Raw”, a compilation of mostly home videos filmed predominantly by Marky was release in 2004 and entered the Billboard video chart at number 5. Certified gold in three countries and currently the best selling Ramones DVD release to date.

In the spring of 2009, Marky launched a capsule collection clothing line with Hilfiger Denim. In 2010, Marky shared his recipe for pasta sauce by introducing Marky Ramone’s Brooklyn’s Own Pasta Sauce.

In February 2010 The Ramones received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. It was the first Grammy for the punk rock pioneers. In early 2010 Marky Ramones Blitzkrieg with Michale Graves released their first single “When We Were Angels” with former member of Sheer Terror, Mark Neuman, playing bass and guitar. With no signs of slowing down, Marky Ramone continues to tour the world with his band, Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg, featuring various lead vocalists including Andrew W.K. and Michale Graves.

Marky is currently in his eighth year as a D.J. on SiriusXM Satellite Radio hosting “Marky Ramone’s Punk Rock Blitzkrieg”.

‘Dangerous Dan’ Toler BENEFIT headlines Dickey Betts-Bonnie Bramlett- Blackhawk

This coming Saturday and Sunday November 12th and 13th will be “The biggest and best concert this area has seen for a long a time” says Mark Serio guitarist and organizer for the benefit to support ‘Dangerous Dan’ Toler and raise awareness for ALS or better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Guitarist ‘Dangerous Dan’ Toler is best known as a member of The Allman Brothers Band, The Gregg Allman Band and Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Earlier this year Toler announced that he had the disease. Recently his condition has worsened and now has trouble speaking.
His younger brother David “Frankie” Toler drummer and former member of The Allman Brothers Band died earlier this year from a prolonged illness.
Last year I covered an event hosted by “Sarasota’s Littlest Heroes” (who were many of the same organizers) to help raise money for two year old Emalynn Roberts diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Polyneuropathy. The concert was held at the same location and headlined by Dickey Betts & Great Southern. The event was a huge success.

The ‘Dangerous Dan’ Toler benefit is promising to be a monumental event. Mark Serio says “The concert is going to be huge.” Musicians are flying in from everywhere to help their friend and fellow musician ‘Dangerous Dan’ Toler.

Later in the evening Bonnie Bramlett and harp virtuoso T.C. Carr take the stage.
Bonnie Bramlett was part of the legendary husband and wife duo Delaney & Bonnie. Delaney & Bonnie & Friends collaborated on stage with legendary “Friends” George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, Gram Parsons, Duane and Gregg Allman and King Curtis to name just a few.

In 1969 Delaney & Bonnie supported Eric Clapton’s short-lived Blind Faith band on the road. Their certified gold third album On Tour with Eric Clapton was their most commercially successful release. In 1970 Delaney & Bonnie & Friends participated in the Festival Express tour (originally billed as the Transcontinental Pop Festival) by train across various Canadian cities with The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Band. Festival Express was a 2003 documentary film about the 1970 train tour including concert footage across Canada. Also in 1970 the band appeared at The Strawberry Fields Festival in front of an estimated 100,000 people in Ontario, Canada.

Delaney & Bonnie divorced in 1973 after releasing their final album D&B Together. The album featured such illustrious artists as Steve Cropper, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Duane Allman, Dave Mason, Leon Russell and Billy Preston.
Delaney & Bonnie’s most memorable hits were Dave Mason’s penned “Only You Know and I Know” and “Never Ending Song of Love.” Bonnie Bramlett also co-wrote “Let It Rain” with Eric Clapton.
Bonnie enjoyed continued success as a solo composer and recording artist while sharing her amazing vocals with Elvin Bishop, Stephen Stills, Little Feat and The Allman Brothers Band throughout the 70’s and 80’s.
In 1979 Bonnie Bramlett participated in the acclaimed Havana Jam Festival in Cuba.
Under a new married name Bonnie Sheridan, she became an actress with an ongoing role on the TV sitcom Roseanne from 1991-95.

Delaney Bramlett died in 2008.

Bonnie Bramlett’s latest album is called ‘Beautiful’ and available at Rockin’ Camel Music.

The Dan Toler Band follows Bonnie Bramlett and then headliner’s Dickey Betts & Great Southern take the stage at around 8:30pm.

Dickey Betts, a Bradenton native, had formed a band in Florida with bassist Berry Oakley.One night they jammed with another local group featuring Duane and Gregg Allman, and The Allman Brothers Band formed in 1969. After the death of Duane Allman in 1971, Betts became the bands sole guitarist. 
Dickey Betts was inducted along with the rest of The Allman Brothers Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Day 2 –Sunday’s music itinerary will feature The Boogiemen opening at 12pm.

The afternoon lineup includes a rendition of 50’s rock and roll icon’s The Platters recreated by Wilson Williams and his Platters.

The Artimus Pyle Band will take the stage late afternoon. Artimus Pyle was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as a member for the Southern Rock /Classic Rock radio mainstay Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Blackhawk (The Outlaws) are the headliners for Sunday evening and will be performing at 8:30pm.
There may even be surprise guests performing during the two-day event.

Blondie Panic of Girls tour coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall

Blondie featuring the enticing and voluptuous New Wave Songstress Deborah Harry will be performing for the first time at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater on Saturday September 24th.

Blondie’s 9th studio album called Panic of Girls is set to be released on September 13th. Debbie Harry, Clem Burke and Chris Stein, along with newer band members Leigh Foxx, Tommy Kessler and Matt Katz-Bohen, will kick off the tour on September 4th.

Blondie was formed in 1974 by original guitarist Chris Stein and Miami- born Deborah Harry (now 66 years old). The band amassed huge Punk followings at New York’s famed CBGB’S, Max’s Kansas City (Debbie Harry was once a waitress there) and Mothers. Blondie’s overwhelming popularity led them to the studio where they recorded their first album called Blondie in 1976 - under the Private Stock label.

The band toured in 1977 with Iggy Pop and David Bowie in support of their first album.
In the summer of 1977 Blondie released their second album called Plastic Letters, followed by a tour of Europe and Asia.
They were considered to be a New Wave -underground band until the release of their third studio album called Parallel Lines. The album considered to be their best effort spawned huge hits like- “Hanging on the Telephone,” “Sunday Girl,” “One Way or Another,” and their Billboard Hot 100 number #1 mega hit “Heart of Glass.” The song was sneered at by Blondie faithful as a sellout to their rooted Punk and New Wave principals for entering the commercially successful world of Disco music. Nevertheless, the Harry/Stein penned chart topper went Gold and became Blondie’s trademark tune.

During my stint in radio as a deejay, “Heart of Glass” and Peaches and Herb’s “Reunited” became the most requested songs on the airwaves at that time.

Of course we were told to play the censored version of Heart of Glass... “Soon turned out I had a heart of glass”

And not the original album version of the song...“Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass.”

The uncensored version seemed minuscule compared to today’s FCC standards across the radio airwaves.

Over the next several years, Blondie became known for their eclectic music styles. While maintaining a New Wave base, the group ventured into Disco, Pop, Rap and Reggae.

In 1979, Blondie released their fourth studio album called Eat to the Beat. The album generated the hits “Dreaming” #2 in the U.K., Atomic #1 in the U.K. and “Call Me” (theme song from the movie American Gigolo) spent 6 weeks at #1 in the U.S. and became their biggest hit song.The album also went certified Platinum.

Blondie’s fifth album, Autoamerican spawned the Reggae-ish tune “The Tide is High,” another #1 hit in the U.S. and U.K. and “Rapture” another #1 hit. Released in 1981, Rapture was considered crucial in formulating Rap music. It was the first single with rap content to be a chart-topper in the U.S. The album went Platinum.

After the release of their sixth studio album called The Hunter in 1982, the band split-up and Deborah Harry pursued a solo career. The album produced their final U.S. hit called “Island of Lost Souls” before Chris Stein fell ill with a rare and often fatal genetic disease which led to the band’s breakup. Harry cared for Stein who eventually recovered.

Blondie reformed in 1997 and regained their popularity with the release of their seventh album called No Exit. The album produced the #1 hit single in the U.K. and 14 other countries called “Maria.” The album sold more than 2-million units worldwide.

Albums that followed were Live in New York, Livid, The Curse of Blondie, Live by Request, Live, Best Live and Live in Toronto.

Blondie celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2006 with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the release of Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision, a best-of collection that contained all their classic videos.

Blondie has sold more than 40 million records worldwide.

U2 continues to sellout stadiums despite music industry failures

In this shameful musical era filled of American Idol absurdity, it’s refreshing to witness true heroes of the music world entertaining the intelligent enthusiast.

The internationally renowned Irish rock band U2 has perpetually been a top draw amongst music enthusiasts since the early 80’s. After their first album Boy (produced the hits “A Day Without Me,” “I Will Follow”) was released in 1980, U2 frontman Bono revealed to Rolling Stone Magazine...

“Even at this stage, I do feel we are meant to be one of the great bands, there’s a certain spark, a certain chemistry, that was special about the Stones, the Who and the Beatles, and I think it’s also special about U2.”

U2’s collaborations and humanitarian efforts in addressing poverty and social issues around the globe have surely earned them the title of rock’s Ambassadors. Bono referred to the bands symbolic “Sunday Bloody Sunday” the opening track from their 1983 album, War as...

“A song of hope and a song of disgust.”

Drummer Larry Mullen mentioned that it was...

“The first time we ever really made a statement.”

Bono was awarded knighthood in 2007 for his humanitarian efforts around the world.

U2’s album War reached  #12 in the U.S. and was their first album to go platinum.
The band transformed into their current majestic stage presence with the release of Under a Blood Red Sky, a live album recorded in Colorado, Boston and Germany.

By 1985 the band was touring intensely to sold-out arenas and stadiums- including an unforgettable performance at Live Aid.

In 1987, U2 released their masterpiece The Joshua Tree- spawning the #1 hit singles- “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” The album sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and escalated the band into superstardom.

In 1991, U2 changed gears musically with the release of Achtung Baby produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and produced five hit songs including “One”, “Mysterious Ways”  and “The Fly.”  

Throughout the 90’s, U2’s Zoo TV and PopMart tours lured millions of fans to monster concert venues as they watched performances on extravagant stage sets.

By 2001, U2 returned to the basics with their album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” topping the charts in 32 countries. U2 also won song of the year at the Grammy’s for “Beautiful Day.”

U2 released How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb in 2004. The album produced the hit “Vertigo”

Their most current album,No Line on the Horizon was the bands 12th  studio album. U2 once again collaborated with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The band supported the album with their worldwide 360- degree tour. The tour officially launched June 30th 2009 and ends July 30th 2011- covering 110 shows.
U2’s only Florida appearance for 2011 will be on June 29th at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Tickets are available here.

The tour will set industry records of epic proportions. Including- largest concert stage ever toured,highest-grossing tour of all time (more than the previous record held by The Rolling Stones of $558 million) and it will also hold the record for highest-attended tour of all time with over 7 million tickets sold (again beating The Rolling Stones previous record of 6.3 million tickets sold.)

U2 was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2005.

The band conquered 22- Grammy Awards and countless supplementary awards globally. U2 have sold more than 150 million records, placing them amongst the best selling music artists of all time.
And the band has accomplished all of this with its four original members...

Alice Cooper- “Elected” into rock and roll’s hall of fame on March 14th

Alice Cooper is truly a pioneer of glam and heavy metal- rock and roll.  In an interview with the East Valley Tribune in Phoenix Arizona, Alice’s hometown, Cooper said, Cooper procreated legendary fans like Peter Sellers, Groucho Marx, Mae West, Salvador Dali and Bob Dylan. He even helped shape the careers of Lady Gaga and Metallica.

"We brought theatrics to rock ‘n’ roll. We did it before Bowie; we did it before Kiss and before anybody. There was no show biz in rock ‘n’ roll before Alice Cooper. It was taboo and really looked down upon to call yourself showbiz. So when we came along, we went as far out on a limb as we possibly could. We did everything we could to annoy every parent in America, then backed it up with anthems that got played. We had 25 gold albums and sold 50 million records; it wasn’t a fluke."

The 63 year old rocker was the first to sell-out concerts by playing the role of a frightening fictitious character.  Cooper stated in an interview that his Alice character was inspired by the film Barbarella.  He said,

“When I saw Anita Pallenberg playing the Great Tyrant in that movie in 1968, wearing long black leather gloves with switchblades coming out of them, I thought, that’s what Alice should look like.”

I remember being nervous, afraid, and excited while waiting for Alice Cooper to appear on stage in the early 70’s. I’d hear all those rumors of what he would do on stage. And I wasn’t so sure if I really wanted to see him decapitate himself with a guillotine. But once his electrifying band led by guitarist Glen Buxton started to rock- out- I became hypnotized into one of his twisted disciples.

Alice Cooper definitely turned rock concerts into a theatrical experience.  Said Cooper...

"You just let your lower self go, and then it takes on all these aspects of the society-the city with horns blowing, the people yelling things at each other, and the all-in-all violence and chaos of the city. Put that on stage with music, and that’s what this is.”

Alice’s screams of rebellion were relentless in his single “I’m Eighteen” from the “Love It to Death” album , an anthem which reached number #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1971. The song epitomized the complicated transition of boy to man during adolescence.

Alice’s next rock and roll anthem “Schools Out” converted mild -mannered preteens into raving disobedient lunatics during their last week of school before the summer break. The song reached the Top 10 in the summer of 1972. It eventually made 21 on Billboard’s top 30 summer songs of all-time.

The “Billion Dollar Babies” album in 1973 became the band’s most successful album reaching number #1 in the US and UK. The album spawned the hits "Elected," "Hello Hooray," "Billion Dollar Babies," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy."

Wearing a top hat and cane, Alice hit the road again, but this time with his version of Broadway and the “Welcome to My Nightmare tour.”  The concept album produced another Top 20 hit with “Only Women Bleed.”

In 1989 Cooper released the “Trash” album that featured another Top Ten hit “Poison”.
In 1991 Alice Cooper released the popular “Hey Stoopid.” The album featured guest appearances from Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Vinnie Moore, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and members of Motley Crue.

By 2010 Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie collaborated on the  "Gruesome Twosome Tour.”

Alice and his longtime producer Bob Ezrin (Who worked with Pink Floyd, Kiss, Lou Reed, and Peter Gabriel to name just a few) are reported together again. Ezrin a partner with “Bigger Picture Group” will be working on a new album and elaborate stage show for an upcoming Alice Cooper tour.

Alice Cooper has been around since I can remember. And I’ll never forget those crazy grade school- rumors.  “Hey Ray, Did you know that Eddie Haskell from Leave it to Beaver is actually Alice Cooper?"

Tampa bay area golfers should watch out for some golfing tips from Alice Cooper, or shall we just call him by his real name for the score card, Vincent Damon Furnier. Alice started playing golf years ago to help overcome his addiction to alcohol. He has a two- handicap and tries to play the game at least six days a week. He’s competed in several Pro-Am competitions and hosts his own charity golf tournament in Phoenix each April.

Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Bob Seger to begin 2011- tour in March

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band begin their first leg of a possible thirty-date tour on March 29th in Saginaw, Michigan. A close Seger representative told Rolling Stone that twenty to thirty additional dates were planned for the spring this year. Florida dates should be announced shortly. In between the tour, Seger hopes to finish his 17th studio album.

Seger was raised in Ann Arbor Michigan. The raspy rooted- rocker performed throughout the 60’s as the Bob Seger System. They released their debut album “The Bob Seger System” in 1969 with the hit single, Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man. (Eagles- founding member Glen Frey sang backing vocals)  The song reached #17 on the singles chart.

Bob Seger gained notoriety once again in 1976 with his Silver Bullet Band. The live album, “Live Bullet”, and studio album, “Night Moves” achieved Platinum status.
Seger and the Silver Bullet band released “Stranger in Town” in 1978.  Included on that album are many of his most recognizable hits, "Old Time Rock n' Roll," (a song that would enjoy additional success with the film Risky Business) and Top40 radio standards "Still the Same," “Hollywood Nights” and “We’ve got Tonight.”

Bob Seger also co-wrote the Eagles #1 hit “Heartache Tonight" from their 1979 album “The Long Run.” The collaboration resulted from Seger and Glenn Frey’s early days in Detroit together.
In 1980, Seger released “Against the Wind” with ex Grand Funk Railroad Keyboardist Craig Frost. It became his only #1 album on the Billboard charts.
After the release of “the Distance” in 1982, he added ex Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer.

The “Like a Rock” studio album arrived in 1986. The song was used as a Chevrolet ad campaign. (Seger chose to support the struggling American automobile workers in Detroit) Seger’s father was also a musician and a Ford plant worker.

Bob Seger was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Seger’s longtime bassist is Sarasota resident Chris Campbell. His influences were: Motown, Tim Bogert, Rare Earth, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Chris says that his nickname is C-Note. "I got a modest inheritance from my father when he passed away. I had a little money -- I was not rich, but it was more than kids my name had, so I always had good equipment and they started calling me C-Note."
